Cosmetic Bonding
Composite bonding offers a natural looking way to repair damaged or discoloured teeth. It can also be used to close gaps, lengthen teeth and protect part of a root that has been exposed due to gum recession.
What are the benefits?
It is a quick and cost effective procedure because there is no need for any part to be specially manufactured and it can usually be put in place during just one visit.
Usually there is no need to remove any healthy tooth during the process and anaesthesia is often not necessary unless the resin is being used to fill a cavity.
What does treatment involve?
- We will choose a composite shade that will match your teeth, then slightly roughen the surface of the tooth with a special gel before a conditioning liquid is applied, to ensure that the bonding will adhere to your tooth.
- Next your dentist will apply the composite and shape as required. This will then be hardened under a special curing light. Finally, it will be polished to match the rest of your teeth.
- The procedure will take around 30 minutes to an hour. However If you are having more than one tooth treated the procedure may take longer.
Aftercare
Avoid tea, coffee, cigarettes and wine for at least 48 hours after the bonding procedure as these can stain the resin.
Composite resin is not as strong as natural teeth but can last for many years if well looked after. It is possible to chip the resin if you bite your fingernails or chew pens so take care. Also keep up with your dental hygiene by brushing twice a day and attend regular dental check-ups.
