Dentures

Dentures are designed to be durable, but will last much longer with proper care. We recommend removing them before you go to sleep to allow your gums to rest. It is essential to store them in water or a dedicated denture solution overnight, as they may lose their shape if they are allowed to dry out.

You should clean your dentures daily using a toothbrush or a specialised denture brush. It is equally important to continue brushing your gums and any remaining natural teeth to maintain overall oral hygiene. Regular check-ups are also important so that your dentist and hygienist can monitor your oral health and ensure your dentures still fit perfectly.

You should wear your dentures for around 8 hours a day at least. This gives your jawbone and gums time to get used to the dentures and prevents sore spots from developing. It is preferable to take them out at night to give your gums a chance to rest.

While your mouth is adjusting or healing, it is best to avoid particularly hard, chewy, or sticky foods. Some patients also find that spicy dishes or alcohol can cause irritation during the initial stages. To help the process along, take your time during meals and cut your food into smaller, bite-sized pieces to make chewing easier.

It can take a little time to feel completely comfortable eating, especially with a full set of dentures. We recommend starting with softer foods and gradually reintroducing firmer items as your confidence grows. You might notice a temporary increase in saliva, but this will settle down quickly as your mouth becomes accustomed to the replacement teeth.

Initially, speaking may be difficult but you can improve this by reading aloud. If you are experiencing any sore spots in your mouth, the denture surface may need some adjustment.
