Invisalign
This subtle but highly effective treatment uses a series of tailor-made aligners to gradually move teeth. It’s a great option for adults or teenagers who may feel self-conscious about wearing glaringly obvious fixed braces and, as there are no braces and wires, you’ll spend less time having adjustments.
What are the benefits?
The real advantage of Invisalign® is that the straightening process is virtually invisible. The aligners are also comfortable and removable, so you can keep your teeth and gums really clean and indulge in all kinds of tasty food as there is no restriction on what you can eat.
Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign® not only controls the level of movement for each aligner, but also how long it takes. This means at each stage, only certain teeth, as prescribed by your personalised plan, will be moved.
It can also treat a whole range of issues, from minor tooth movements to much more involved cases. Even younger teenagers whose teeth haven’t fully erupted can be treated with the specially formulated Invisalign Teen®.
What does treatment involve?
- We will check if you are a suitable candidate for this innovative treatment by taking an impression of your teeth. We will then use 3D technology to create a personalised plan, which will show you exactly how your teeth will look during and after treatment.
- When the aligners have been made, your first set will be put in place and you will then wear a different custom made aligner every two weeks until the controlled force gradually shifts your teeth into the desired position.
- You may experience some minor discomfort for a few days, when a new aligner is fitted at each stage of the treatment, however this is usually just a feeling of pressure and a good sign that the treatment is working.
- The length of time that treatment takes will vary, but most cases are completed in 6-12 months. Invisalign® will only work while you are actually wearing the aligners so we recommend that they are worn day and night for a minimum of 22–24 hours – this shouldn’t be a problem as you’ll probably hardly notice that you’re wearing them.
Aftercare
After treatment, and as with all tooth straightening procedures, you will have to wear a special retainer to maintain your new straighter smile. This will prevent your teeth from moving back to their old position. We will advise which retainer will be best for you.
