Why have root canal treatment?

If you are in severe dental pain, root canal treatment can help you feel more comfortable, save your natural tooth from extraction and remove the source of infection. It is more cost-effective than replacing a lost or extracted tooth, and improves both function and appearance.

The dental pulp within your tooth is made up of soft tissue, including nerves and blood vessels, and extends from the crown to the tips of the root. If the pulp becomes infected, you may experience pain, sensitivity or tenderness requiring root canal treatment to solve.

What does root canal treatment involve?

We begin by taking an X-ray to check the root canals of your tooth in detail, and make sure there are no signs of infection elsewhere in your mouth. We plan your treatment and give you an idea of the timeframes needed for each stage.

We place a rubber sheet around your tooth to keep it dry during treatment before carefully removing the infected pulp. We always use local anaesthetic to ensure you remain comfortable throughout. We then flush the root canals to thoroughly clean them.

We shape the root canals using small and sterile instruments before washing them again to remove any lasting debris. We fill and seal the tooth using a rubber compound material and permanent filling.

In many cases, we use a crown to restore strength, shape and function for a natural-looking finish.
